Mystery solved!

I think I have solved one mystery, with the help of a Facebook friend.  The thought had occurred to me that they might be blackberries, but blackberries grow on tall, arching canes, and these are ground huggers.  After doing some more research, I have decided that they are dewberries, a close cousin of blackberries.  They bloom early, in March or April, while blackberries bloom around Memorial Day.  The cold snap that we get toward the end of May is known as “Blackberry Winter”.  Whew!  Glad we solved that one!!
