This is great news! I hope it catches on everywhere.
Ohio is getting its first two Green House nursing homes, reports The Courier, a newspaper in Findlay, OH. Green House facilities are smaller and more homelike than traditional ones. The Courier describes them this way:
Each resident will have his or her own bedroom and full bathroom, the opportunity to eat at a dining room table that seats all residents and caregivers, and access to a hearth room, den, front porch, back patio and fenced backyard with a walkway, [Laura Voth, CEO of Mennonite Home Communities of Ohio, the organization erecting the homes,] said.
Green House living will “allow them to participate in the normal activities of daily living,” Voth said. She listed laundry, housecleaning and food preparation as examples.
“It is all about choice,” she said. “If they say, ‘I don’t want to,’ they don’t have to. If they say, ‘I want to,’ we can make it happen.”
