Making place mats with appliqued mittens

Today I’m working on a set of six place mats in fabrics from Moda’s Countdown to Christmas.  I made a couple of sets of two last year, but fortunately had enough fabric left over to make six more.

Here’s how I create the fluffy “fur” cuffs on the mittens.  It’s four layers of off-white flannel cut 1 inch wide and the same length as the mitten.  Just stitch right down the center of the strips.

Create the “fur” effect by clipping the flannel almost to the stitching about 1/8 inch apart.   Here it is just fluffed by hand.  It will ravel out when washed.

Here’s all the squares laid out before stitching.  The small squares are 5 inches and the big square is 9 inches.  They will be stitched together with 1/2 inch seams.
